What Excites & Terrifies Me About Having A Baby

As I'm now approaching the final few weeks of my pregnancy, it's all starting to feel very real now. The nursery is almost finished (tour coming soon!) and all of the big baby purchases have been made. Plus, it's now less than two weeks until I go on maternity leave!! It's got me thinking about all of the things I'm going to love about becoming a mother, and also the things that terrify me ever so slightly. They are only little worries, so this post in a way is meant to be taken a little lightheartedly!

What excites me.....

Finally getting to see what (and who) he looks like We had a 4D scan at 16 weeks when we found out the gender, but of course he's going to have changed a lot since then, so I can't wait to see his little face. At that point I really think he was starting to look like his dad, so I wonder if that's changed at all. We were hoping to have another 4D scan around the 30 week mark, but time & money kind of got in the way a bit there!

Watching him grow & capturing all the memories in my Project Life book I think I've mentioned before that I will be starting a Project Life book documenting his first year(s) once he's born. I can't wait to watch him grow up and see the little person he becomes, it must be the best part about being a mother, and I think it will be great to have that all documented somewhere to look back on too.

Seeing him in his outfits Obviously I realise he's not a little dress up doll, but I was putting his clothes away the other day and wondering just what he'd look like in them. We've been sitting on a lot of these clothes since I was 12 weeks pregnant, so it will be great to finally be able to use them once he's here.

The end of gestational diabetes A bit of a selfish one I'm afraid, but the last couple of months have not been great with constantly having to watch what I eat and pricking my finger 4 times a day. It's not been the most fun, and I can't wait to just be able to relax my diet a little bit. I'm not completely out of the woods as soon as I give birth, I have to have a test when he's six weeks old to check I've not developed type 2 diabetes, but there will be no more self testing every day - hurrah!

What terrifies me.....

Giving birth to a big baby So this one is less said in jest, it is an actual concern for me. With gestational diabetes you are more at risk of giving birth to a larger baby. I've had scans to check on his growth over the past few weeks, and he is still within normal range which is good, but they aren't always 100% accurate, but fingers crossed it's not far off!

Poop explosions! I've dealt with a fair amount of baby vomit over the last year, as my niece was quite a sicky baby, but one thing I never dealt with from her was the huge poop explosions, I've only heard the horror stories! I'm talking the ones where it's completely come out of the nappy, is all over the childs clothes, and they need bathing immediately. I'm not great with nappies as it is, so god help me if this happens in a public place!

Crashing the pram I'm not the strongest of people, and those travel systems are actually quite heavy, and really hard to navigate. I do worry that I'll be out shopping with him one day and knock a display over, or run over some poor innocent persons foot. Hopefully my strength will build up over time & I'll become a pro at it!

Being judged for doing things "the wrong way" Obviously this shouldn't worry me at all, I should just be concentrating on doing what I feel is best for my baby, but everyone has always got their own opinion and I can tell it's going to irritate the hell out of me! My sister has told me she's experienced this quite a bit, despite the fact I think she is a fantastic mother - to be honest I'd love to be just like she's been. I think strangers staring in public will get to me too!

Have you had a baby, or are you expecting too? I'd love to know what excited/terrified you.

  1. HEY! I think we're due almost at the same time! I'm now 38+2 weeks pregnant :-) At the moment I'm just ready to push this baby out already and get my own "personal" space back. I really haven't slept so well during these past weeks so I'm really looking forward to those "sleepless" nights with night feeds haha.
So far, I've been super calm about the upcoming labor & everything in general, which is kind of weird considering that this is my first kid hahah! Well, we'll see then.
I hope everything goes fine with you & you'll get to meet your baby soon! :-)

    1. I'm a bit further behind you as I'm 35+1 today, I'm also really looking forward to getting the baby out now, I'm getting a tad uncomfortable! Good luck to you too, I hope everything goes well x

  2. Much further behind than you, I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant however I'm quite anxious about having a big baby too, myself and my partner weren't exactly small when we were born so I don't think we've got genetics on our side.

Also of course not looking forward to poop explosions!

    1. Congratulations! Hope the pregnancy goes well for you. You never know, it doesn't always follow the same pattern as the parents...my parents weren't exactly small babies but I was teeny tiny & that was after being a week late! x
